Internet Killed the Video Store

Blockbuster has announced it’s closing stores. Here’s a little ditty I wrote in honour and parody of the video store. I suppose I was truly a child of the 80s and I remember watching Video Killed the Radio Star over and over during lunch in my fifth grade class room. (Our teacher would record MTV and bring it in. To keep it educational, we had to write a test at the end. Even now, I can tell you obscure details about videos from that time.) Video Killed the Radio Star was the first video ever played on MTV, by the way.

With apologies and much affection for the Buggles:

Internet Killed the Video Store

I heard you on the ghetto back in 82
Lying awake intending pressing play for you
If I hated a song I could fast forward through

They paid no credit for torrents downloaded for free
Hacked apart MP3s with new technology
And now I understand their sheer Audacity

Oh a oh
I met your children
Oh a oh
What did you tell them?

Internet killed the video store
Internet killed the video store

Free stuff came and took your heart
Oh a a a oh

And now we meet in an empty video store
We see the shelves and it seems so long ago
And you remember the jingles used to go

Oh a oh
Tainted love.
Oh a oh
I want to know what love is

Internet killed the video store
Internet killed the video store

On my Ipod and dock in the car
We can’t rewind Netflix far
Youtube came and took your heart
Put the blame on PVR

Internet killed the video store
Internet killed the video store

Internet killed the video store
Internet killed the video store

Internet killed the video store

You are a video store

Internet killed the video store
You are a video store

Oh a oh
Oh a oh
Oh a oh
