I’ve been a consultant for more than 13 years. I love consulting and I love helping other people get into it. Heck, I’ve written hundreds of articles on consulting for this site. I’d have to love what I do to pump out that much content!
But even I have my days. You know the kind I mean. The days where I’m looking at the mountain ahead of me and wondering how I’ll climb it. The days where I feel alone on my path and unsure of which way to go. Sometimes, it even feels like there’s a black cloud over my head.
I’ve realized that those days are a gift, though. When I get into that sort of situation, I realize that it’s because something needs fixing. Those days are a remind of my need to check my orientation and make sure I’m on the right path.
This week, I realized I need to be connecting with more people. Over the summer, I focused on a lot of independent projects and had fewer opportunities to collaborate. I didn’t do much networking or go to many events. And, while I worked a lot, I didn’t do anything really creative or push my limits. And I just focused on the day to day stuff and not the big picture.
Fortunately, there are easy solutions for these things. I just need to:
- get out and connect with people, through more events, projects and conversations
- seek out collaborative projects
- find more opportunities to teach and present
- do some more creative marketing projects
Pretty simple. But it took a few days. At first, I felt a little lost. Then I realized that, no, that sense that I’m off course is right. And reflecting on what I like to do and need to do helps. It always has.
How about you? How do you know when something needs fixing in your business or career?
