Steps to becoming a consultant – check out our FAQ on how to get into consulting. We’ve moved all the content over to that page.
The great thing about getting into consulting is that you can take it at your own pace – and on your own agenda. You don’t need to follow any particular steps to becoming a consultant in order. Some people like to do a self assessment, research and business plan up front. Others find themselves answering a call or email from someone they know – "Hey, do you ever do consulting?" Still others print up business cards and head off to networking events and figure out things like business permits, taxes and contracts later.
Of course, for best results, you do want to do some sort of self assessment and business plan at some point. While we offer Discover Your Inner Consultant (self assessment book) and Write Your Business Plan Now and the Consulting Start-up Course, many people just test the waters by taking on one or two gigs and jotting down their goals for the year. But if you’re not the kind of person who likes to wing it, you’ll probably benefit by going through a formal process of self assessment and business planning – and that’s why we offer those resources.
